ABOUT US

This blog was created by a group of graduate students in Drexel's Art Therapy and Counseling program. The purpose of this blog is to serve as a resource for students and clinicians considering the exploration of art media and processes used within art therapy practices towards symptom alleviation and quality of life improvement.

The Media, Materials, and Process in Art Therapy course focuses on the exploration of art media and processes used within art therapy practices towards symptom alleviation and quality of life improvement. Responses to art materials will be investigated through studio-based independent learning supplemented by curated readings, lecture and class discussion. Students will integrate their understanding of ethical and cultural implications of art making processes as it relates to treatment planning and specific diagnostic categories. Students will investigate both traditional and non-traditional art materials while reflecting on client accessibility and familiarity as well as cultural contexts. Students will integrate their understanding of the safety, psychological properties, ethical and cultural implications of art making processes at it relates to treatment planning and assessment strategies in the context of art therapy. Students will gain a better understanding of traditional approaches to materials used in art therapy as well as non-traditional approaches to materials that can promote and inspire the creative process. The Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) will be used as a researched base foundation to integrate various media properties and processes. Students will present their artwork at the end of the course to share their insights and connect media, processes, theory and treatment applications.
